Dress Code 101

Tana French once said, “I love the unspoken dress code.” Really? Who loves not knowing what to wear to an event or restaurant? Not me.

Now that it’s summer and many of us are starting to resume aspects of our pre-Covid lives, you may see more invitations to backyard get-togethers, fundraisers and weddings. You may also be venturing outdoors to your local restaurants or even better, making dinner reservations for your upcoming vacation. It’s exciting to have to get dressed again. However, as you scroll down the Evite and see “smart casual” or you read an invitation and it says “creative cocktail,” confusion quickly sets in and you wonder what to wear because you have no idea what those terms even mean. Thankfully, you are not alone. Hence, this article.

According to Wikipedia, “a dress code is a set of rules, often written, with regards to clothing. Dress codes are created out of social perceptions and norms, and vary based on purpose, circumstances, and occasions.” Throughout history, a dress code has been used to differentiate one’s self from other classes of people. Today, schools, the workplace, social gatherings and restaurants often acknowledge dress codes to inform people of appropriate attire. Let’s break down common dress code terms so we can dress accordingly.

Casual Casual is basically a non-dress code. Meaning you can wear comfortable clothing. Think jeans and a fuss-free top, a sundress or shorts, a button down or polo shirt. Pair with sandals, sneakers, loafers or whatever is comfy.

Business Casual Business Casual is what many people would typically wear to work at the office. Think khakis or slacks, sport coat or blazer, skirts, dresses and pretty blouses. Pair with heels, flats, loafers or loafer-style shoes.

Smart Casual Smart Casual, also referred to as Dressy Casual, is a versatile balance between formal and casual. This is when you pair casual, business casual and business pieces together to make a “smart” outfit. Think dark denim, slacks, jumpsuits, dress shirts, fancier tops and sport coat, blazer or jacket.

Business Business attire is more sophisticated than Smart Casual. Think suits, ties, dress shirts, blouses and dresses. Heels and dress shoes are appropriate.

Creative Cocktail Creative Cocktail is a less-structured side of evening with some pizazz. It's polished but not overly dressy, unexpected but not inappropriate. Think fun, not sensible and safe. Add some spice and show your personality.

Semi-Formal Semi-Formal is more fancy than business attire but a notch below formal tuxedos and fancy gowns. Think little black dress, dark suit, dress shirt and dressy separates.

Formal Formal attire, also referred to as Black Tie, is the most fancy of all dress codes. Typically for events such as weddings, proms, formal dinners, and theatre. Think tuxedos, floor-length gowns and sparkly accessories.
