Layering Up!

Have you got the mid-winter blahs? Me too. February is notoriously known as one of the hardest months to get through. Even though I’m looking out my window at stark landscapes and a continuously gray sky, I’m dreaming of sunny, warmer days ahead. Unfortunately, those days are still a ways away so in the meantime, I’m layering up and hunkering down.

Speaking of layering, it’s an essential skill during the winter months. Layered clothing is a term describing a way of dressing using garments that are worn on top of each other. When it’s cold outside, all we want to do is layer up. Personally, I loathe being cold so the more layers, the better for me. However, before you pile on anything and everything that is fleece or wool in your closet, don’t forget that how you layer clothes can be both functional and fashionable. So, choose your layers wisely!

Layering gives you a chance to play around with the pieces in your wardrobe. I encourage you to experiment with different textures, fabrics, patterns and colors when getting dressed.

As a stylist, the most important piece of advice I give my clients is that “every layer counts.” Meaning, no matter how many layers you add, each layer is important. Every layer should enhance your outfit, not take away. For example, if you start with a tee and jeans and then add a flannel, a sweater, a coat and a scarf, that tee and jeans base layer should look good all by itself. The additional layers that you add on top should compliment your base layer, work cohesively together and keep you warm.
